Liverpool have stepped up their search for another centre-back after a difficult start to pre-season exposed their lack of senior defensive options.
Andoni Iraola has made greater depth in central defence a priority before the new campaign begins.
Joe Gomez suffered an early injury during Liverpool’s friendly win over Sunderland, forcing Iraola to rely on 18-year-olds Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk remains on an extended post-World Cup break. Summer arrivals Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are also continuing their recoveries from injury.
As a result, Liverpool have started assessing several experienced defenders who could provide immediate cover and competition.
According to TEAMtalk, former Manchester City defender John Stones has emerged as one of the leading options under consideration.
The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City and would be open to discussing a move to Anfield.
That possibility makes him especially attractive to Iraola as Liverpool look to strengthen without paying a transfer fee. However, the Reds face competition for his signature.
Stones is also holding talks with Arsenal and Chelsea while considering interest from Europe, Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League.
Liverpool are also seriously considering Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa. The club value his ability to play at centre-back and right-back.
Arsenal also remain interested in Konsa, but Liverpool have now entered the race. Paris Saint-Germain defender Illia Zabarnyi represents another possible option.
Iraola knows Zabarnyi from their time together at Bournemouth and would welcome another opportunity to work with him.
Liverpool continue to admire Levi Colwill and Micky van de Ven, but Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of selling either defender.
The Reds have also received updates on Antonio Silva and Ousmane Diomande. However, Silva is expected to join Bournemouth, while Nottingham Forest are advancing in talks for Diomande.
Liverpool therefore have several defensive options under consideration. But Stones currently offers the most straightforward route to adding proven experience before the season starts.
