Liverpool have started planning for their long-term defence as Virgil van Dijk approaches the latter stages of his career.
The Reds strengthened their back line during the summer by signing Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60 million. They also brought Ronald Araujo to Anfield on loan from Barcelona.
However, Liverpool are already considering further defensive options for 2027. Van Dijk remains part of Andoni Iraola’s squad at the age of 35.
Liverpool have collected five points from their opening three Premier League matches under Iraola. They conceded twice against both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest before beating Ipswich Town 2-0.
The club are now monitoring another Premier League defender as part of their longer-term planning.
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have identified Newcastle United centre-back Malick Thiaw as one potential successor to Van Dijk.
Manchester United are also monitoring the 25-year-old Germany international ahead of possible defensive changes in 2027.
However, neither Liverpool nor United have opened negotiations or made direct contact regarding a transfer. Both clubs are expected to continue scouting Thiaw throughout the season.
Thiaw joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2025 and has since become a regular starter under Matthias Jaissle.
Liverpool previously monitored the defender before his Newcastle move. His ability to operate at centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield gives him additional versatility.
Newcastle currently have no intention of selling Thiaw. The Magpies would reportedly demand between £65 million and £70 million if their position changes.
Meanwhile, Liverpool must also make a decision regarding Araujo. The Barcelona defender is spending the season on loan at Anfield and could potentially join permanently.
For now, Liverpool’s interest in Thiaw remains at the monitoring stage, with no talks or approach taking place.
Nevertheless, the Newcastle defender has emerged as one of the players Liverpool are considering as they prepare for a future beyond Van Dijk.
