Liverpool are entering a new era after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League and failed to build on the title-winning success they enjoyed the previous season.
A combination of inconsistent performances, tactical issues and dressing-room tensions prevented Liverpool from competing at the level expected at Anfield.
The club ended the season without silverware and responded by appointing Andoni Iraola as their new manager. Meanwhile, AC Milan have also started a new chapter.
Ruben Amorim has begun work on his project in Italy and is already identifying players who can help implement his ideas.
According to Correio da Manha (via Sportwitness), Liverpool have joined AC Milan in the race to sign Sporting CP winger Francisco Trincao, with Amorim personally keen on the move.
Unlike Liverpool, the Milan boss possesses extensive first-hand experience of working with Trincao.
The pair previously worked together at Braga before reuniting at Sporting following the winger’s difficult spells at Barcelona and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
That move proved crucial in reviving Trincao’s career. During two full seasons under Amorim in Lisbon, Trincao made 90 appearances, scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists.
He developed into one of Sporting’s most influential attacking players and became a key figure in Amorim’s system.
Interestingly, Trincao produced his most productive seasons in terms of goal contributions after Amorim left the club. Liverpool’s interest remains strong despite the arrival of Victor Munoz.
Portuguese reports continue to place the Reds among the leading contenders for the winger’s signature.
However, there is still no indication that Liverpool have submitted a formal offer. Trincao could cost around €50 million, slightly below his €60 million release clause.
Liverpool may have spent weeks leading the race, but they now face competition from a manager who knows Trincao better than almost anyone.
