Virgil van Dijk has been the backbone of Liverpool’s defence since his move from Southampton in 2018. The Reds paid £75 million at that time for the Dutch defender.
The 34-year-old has made over 350 appearances for the Reds and won several major trophies. Van Dijk has won everything he could with Liverpool.
The Dutch international has been a Champions League winner, a Premier League winner twice, an FA Cup winner, and a Carabao Cup winner twice.
His current contract will expire in 2027. So, Liverpool have taken a clear stance on the future of their captain, as they are planning for the future.
According to Football Insider, the club have no intention of selling Virgil van Dijk and are prepared to let him see out the remainder of his contract at Anfield.
Despite criticism following the recent defeat to Bournemouth, the Reds see Van Dijk as a key part of the squad heading into next season.
Liverpool are already preparing for a change at centre-back. Ibrahima Konate is edging closer to an exit, with his contract ending in June 2026.
Konate missed the Bournemouth game for personal reasons. So, at the Vitality Stadium, Van Dijk partnered Joe Gomez at the heart of defence.
That pairing did not last long, as Gomez was forced off injured before half-time. This left Wataru Endo to drop into an unfamiliar role.
Liverpool currently have just four senior players who are natural centre-backs. This has accelerated their summer planning. One name already on Liverpool’s radar is Micky van de Ven.
The Reds view the Dutch defender as a potential replacement for Konate and a long-term successor to Van Dijk.
So, Liverpool know that any move for Van de Ven would come at a high cost. But still, they are not ready to part ways with their captain.
