Liverpool offered chance to sign Real Madrid defender

Liverpool have not opened formal talks because of the defender’s position.

Liverpool are continuing to reshape their squad after a disappointing 2025–26 campaign that ended with the Reds failing to retain their Premier League crown.

Andoni Iraola has already started rebuilding the squad following his arrival at Anfield.

The club have signed Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz. Meanwhile, negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola remain ongoing.

Despite those attacking plans, Liverpool also want to strengthen their defensive options before the transfer window closes.

The need for another defender has become increasingly clear after last season’s injury problems exposed a lack of depth across the back line.

Liverpool are therefore keeping an eye on opportunities that emerge late in the market. As per TEAMtalk, one such opportunity has arrived after intermediaries offered Raul Asencio to Liverpool.

Real Madrid are prepared to let the 23-year-old leave this summer, and the Reds have been made aware of his availability.

The report claims Liverpool were intrigued by the proposal because they have admired Asencio for some time. However, the player’s own stance remains the biggest obstacle.

Asencio has no intention of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu despite Real Madrid’s willingness to sanction a sale.

The situation changed after Jose Mourinho took charge, with the Portuguese manager informing the defender that he is not part of his long-term plans.

Real Madrid’s arrivals of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries have increased competition for places, making regular minutes harder to secure.

Even so, Asencio wants to stay and fight for his position. Liverpool have not opened formal talks because of the defender’s position.

The Reds would remain firmly interested if Asencio changes his mind later in the window, but, for now, a move to Anfield appears unlikely.
