Liverpool reject chance to sign England World Cup hero

Having had a stellar World Cup campaign, Liverpool have reportedly rejected the chance to sign this World Cup star.

He had one of England’s best World Cups this summer.

With the kind of performances that make clubs take notice.

His representatives certainly noticed the interest.

They offered him to Liverpool.

And the answer they received was not the one they were hoping for.

Liverpool reject chance to sign Djed Spence as Reds hold firm on transfer priorities despite defensive injuries

According to the Mirror, Liverpool have confirmed they have “absolutely no intention” of pursuing a summer move for Spence, with the club holding firm on their predetermined recruitment priorities even as injuries across the defensive line create obvious concerns ahead of the new season.

The stance has surprised many.

Liverpool are currently without Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Conor Bradley, all injured simultaneously.

Spence can play right-back and left-back.

He impressed enormously for England in North America, his dynamic runs and defensive composure proving crucial in the quarter-final victory over Norway in extra time.

He wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side have signed Andy Robertson and tied Pedro Porro to a new long-term deal, closing the door on consistent minutes for Spence in north London.

His camp offered him around.

Manchester United are also in the picture as a possible Lewis Hall alternative.

But Liverpool’s internal message is clear.

Andoni Iraola is not assessing the defensive market at this stage.

The club’s resources, financial and in terms of transfer focus, are pointed entirely at attacking reinforcement.

Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are the live conversations at Anfield right now.

Spence, for all his World Cup quality, does not fit the direction the club are heading this summer.

The decision will frustrate supporters who see a logical fit being declined at a time of genuine defensive vulnerability.

But the plan is the plan.

And Liverpool are not changing it.
