Liverpool are no stranger to losing players.
Despite being the most successful club in England, Liverpool have seen multiple top players leave in various different eras.
Steve McManaman and Michael Owen both left for Real Madrid in 1999 and 2004 respectively.
Javier Mascherano left for FC Barcelona in 2010 and Luis Suárez followed suit in 2014.
Raheem Sterling controversially departed for Manchester City in 2015 and Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in 2018.
His transfer did pave the way for the arrivals of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, a sliding doors moment in Liverpool given their success since.
Even with the success, this has not stopped Liverpool players leaving, with right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold departing in the summer after running down his contract.
It now appears that another Liverpool player is set for a departure to Real Madrid.
This is another challenge behind the scenes for manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes after contract talks all of last season surrounding Trent, van Dijk and Mohammed Salah.
Liverpool star rejects new contract
According to reports, Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté has rejected a new contract offer from the club.
With a year left of his contract, the French international looks set to follow the same path as former teammate Trent.
This would be a blow to Liverpool, given Konaté‘s success since arriving at the club.
In his first season, he was two games away from being part of history as Liverpool came close to a quadruple after final day heartbreak in the Premier League and a Champions League final loss.
Since arriving in 2021, he has won a Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups.
With Real Madrid heavily linked, a move could even take place this summer if Real Madrid offer the right fee.
However, based on recent history with the move of Trent, Kylian Mbappé and Antonio Rüdiger, it is likely that Konaté will spend the next season at Liverpool and leave on a free in the summer.
