Manchester City continued their summer rebuild under Enzo Maresca after completing the club’s first signing since the Italian took charge at the Etihad Stadium.
The former Chelsea manager has already overseen major changes to his squad following Pep Guardiola’s departure earlier this summer.
City broke their transfer record to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and also secured highly-rated French winger Mathys Detourbet.
Several senior departures have followed in the opposite direction.
Bernardo Silva joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, while Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji both left the club permanently.
Attention has now shifted towards strengthening the next generation of talent within the squad.
Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday.
The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2031.
However, he will spend the entire 2026-27 campaign on loan at Queens Park Rangers to continue his development with regular first-team football.
The move also marks a return to familiar surroundings for the goalkeeper. Charles previously spent time in Manchester City’s academy before leaving for Sheffield Wednesday in 2021.
His progress in South Yorkshire quickly attracted attention. The goalkeeper made his senior debut in January 2024 and went on to make 36 first-team appearances for Wednesday.
His performances also earned him international recognition with Northern Ireland. Charles has already collected 12 senior caps despite still being only 20 years old.
Manchester City’s recruitment team tracked his development closely before deciding to bring him back to the club.
The decision fits Maresca’s long-term vision of building a younger squad capable of sustaining success for years to come.
City believe the loan move to QPR will provide another important stage in his development before he eventually returns to compete for a place at the Etihad Stadium.
