Manchester City are continuing to reshape their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign under Enzo Maresca.
The club have already made significant changes in midfield after several important departures during the summer transfer window.
Rodri completed a £65 million move to Barcelona, while Tijjani Reijnders also left City for Al Qadsiah.
Manchester City responded by signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a massive £116 million transfer.
However, the midfield rebuild may not stop there as Maresca looks to strengthen his options further.
City are also close to adding Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, while Nico Gonzalez could leave before the transfer deadline.
Their preparations for the new season have produced mixed results during Maresca’s first summer in charge.
City drew 1-1 with Inter Milan before recording 3-1 victories against Team K League and Atletico Madrid.
However, Arsenal then defeated them 3-0 in the Community Shield ahead of their Premier League opener against Bournemouth.
The club are also preparing to lose more attacking players, with Savinho and Omar Marmoush nearing Tottenham moves.
Therefore, City continue to assess opportunities across the squad as they enter an important period of transition.
According to El Nacional, Manchester City have set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as another possible midfield addition.
The Dutch international has lost his starting position following Rodri’s arrival at Barcelona during the summer window.
Barcelona now prefer younger options such as Marc Bernal and Gavi, while De Jong’s future has become increasingly uncertain.
City reportedly hold serious interest in the midfielder and are already considering two possible dates for a move.
The first option would involve trying to sign De Jong in January once he recovers from his latest injury.
Alternatively, Manchester City could wait until next summer before making a more considered move for the Barcelona midfielder.
Barcelona are also prepared to consider his departure, with Joan Laporta and Deco believing his time at the club has ended.
