Manchester United signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan in 2023.
The Red Devils paid a staggering £43.8m up front and an additional £3.4m in potential add-ons.
Now, one thing needs to be clear: Andre Onana was not the first choice for the Manchester United recruitment team.
FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa was the primary target for the Red Devils. However, the manager back then was Erik ten Hag.
He tended to go after players who brought success during his Ajax days.
So, naturally, Manchester United went on to sign Andre Onana as he was brilliant at Ajax and also, at Inter.
However, Andre Onana replaced David de Gea at Manchester United, a player who was guarding the fort at Old Trafford for over a decade and won multiple player of the season awards.
Onana had to be at his best, but things went south from the moment he started at Old Trafford.
Mistakes after mistakes in key matches turned fans against him. After Erik ten Hag got sacked and new manager Ruben Amorim took over, there was one thing clear: he wanted to change the goalkeeper.
Although Ruben Amorim was supporting Onana publicly, there were rumours that Manchester United were looking for a new goalkeeper to replace the current number one.
Now, according to Gaston Edul, Manchester United are ready to launch a bid for the player Ruben Amorim thinks is the ideal replacement for Andre Onana, Emiliano Martinez.
The Argentine World Cup winner’s contract with Aston Villa is valid till 2029.
This will give Villa a strong position in the negotiations as they will be asking for a generous amount of money for their star player.
Also, Emiliano Martinez is looking for a new challenge. The former Arsenal shot stopper will be open to a move to Old Trafford.
It will be interesting to see whether the Red Devils can pull this Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United transfer.
