Newcastle United are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window as uncertainty continues to surround parts of Eddie Howe’s squad.
The Magpies remain determined to strengthen ahead of next season and have already identified several targets across Europe.
Midfield recruitment could become even more important if Sandro Tonali leaves St James’ Park.
Tottenham Hotspur continue to show interest in the Italian, forcing Newcastle to explore possible replacements. As a result, the club have intensified their search for a long-term midfield solution.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit and currently lead the race for the Dutch youngster.
The report states that Newcastle have tracked Smit for an extended period and view him as an ideal fit for their future plans.
However, Newcastle face significant competition. Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have all been approached regarding Smit’s availability as interest in the midfielder continues to grow.
Smit remains one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Dutch football. Despite missing out on the Netherlands squad for the World Cup, the 20-year-old continues to attract attention.
AZ Alkmaar are understood to value Smit at around €60 million (£52 million) and would prefer to keep him for at least another season. For now, Newcastle appear to be in a strong position.
Yet with interest arriving from across the Premier League and Europe, the race for Kees Smit is only becoming more competitive as the summer window progresses.
