Newcastle United are working to strengthen their squad after a turbulent summer that has brought major changes at St James’ Park.
The Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League last season and missed out on European football.
They have since lost several important players while Matthias Jaissle has replaced Eddie Howe as head coach. Newcastle have already invested in younger talents.
But defensive reinforcements remain under consideration as Jaissle prepares for his first campaign in charge.
The departures of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett have reduced Newcastle’s options at full-back.
Therefore, the club are assessing several potential additions before deciding which deal to prioritise.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United have now opened talks with Benfica over Amar Dedic, with the 23-year-old giving the green light to a potential move to Tyneside.
Dedic is reportedly eager to join Newcastle and would welcome the opportunity to reunite with Jaissle.
The pair previously worked together at Liefering before later crossing paths again at Red Bull Salzburg.
Jaissle has approved Newcastle’s pursuit, although the Bosnia international was already on the club’s radar before the German coach arrived.
Benfica value Dedic at approximately €30 million (£25.6 million) and are ready to consider offers for the defender.
However, Newcastle have yet to decide whether they will make him their preferred defensive target. The club continue to assess alternative options before stepping up negotiations.
There is also competition for his signature, with Everton and Fulham reportedly monitoring the situation.
Nevertheless, Newcastle have received an important boost because Dedic’s preference is clear.
He is keen on the move and interested in working with Jaissle again. So, it leaves the Magpies well positioned if they decide to accelerate negotiations with Benfica.
