Newcastle United are rebuilding their squad after a disappointing 2025/26 season ended with a 12th-place Premier League finish.
The Magpies collected 49 points and struggled for consistency throughout the campaign.
Eddie Howe subsequently left his position, with Newcastle appointing Matthias Jaissle as their new manager. Several established players have also departed St James’ Park this summer.
Sandro Tonali completed a £100 million move to Tottenham Hotspur. Bruno Guimaraes also joined Arsenal for £75 million.
Those departures created significant gaps in Newcastle’s midfield despite the arrivals of Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur.
The club have therefore continued exploring the market for further reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
According to David Ornstein, Newcastle United are now in talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
The discussions remain exploratory, with Newcastle considering several options as they attempt to strengthen Jaissle’s squad.
Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto for €60 million in January 2025.
He initially featured regularly after arriving at the Etihad Stadium. However, his opportunities became more limited during the second half of last season.
The 24-year-old made 41 appearances across the 2025/26 campaign but started only two Premier League matches after January.
Despite his reduced playing time, Gonzalez recently said he wanted to remain at Manchester City.
He also featured in Sunday’s Community Shield defeat against Arsenal, playing the final 11 minutes as a substitute. However, Manchester City have undergone major changes this summer.
Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola, while Rodri completed a move to Barcelona. Bernardo Silva and John Stones also departed after their contracts expired.
Newcastle have already completed six summer signings as part of their new recruitment strategy.
However, most of those additions are young players, and the club remain keen to strengthen the squad with more experience.
Talks for Gonzalez could now provide Newcastle with another midfield option as Jaissle reshapes his squad ahead of the new campaign.
