Real Madrid and Barcelona in race to sign Chelsea star

Chelsea may soon face a decision they never expected to consider.

Real Madrid and Barcelona crests

Chelsea’s financial situation could force the club into an unexpected decision this summer despite several key players being tied down to long-term contracts.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital handed massive deals to many stars during their rebuild at Stamford Bridge.

However, another season without Champions League football is now creating fresh concerns behind the scenes.

As a result, Chelsea may eventually have to consider selling one of their most valuable academy graduates to balance the books.

That situation has already attracted attention from two of Europe’s biggest clubs.

According to MARCA, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are closely monitoring Levi Colwill ahead of the summer transfer window.

The England international reportedly fits the exact defensive profile both Spanish giants want for the future.

The 23-year-old still has four years remaining on his Chelsea contract, with the club also holding an option for an extra season.

However, his current deal remains shorter than several other long-term agreements handed out during Chelsea’s rebuild.

Before suffering a serious cruciate ligament injury earlier this season, Colwill established himself as a key figure inside the first team.

The defender played a major role during Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph and featured regularly before his long absence.

He recently returned for Chelsea’s final matches of the season and immediately reminded supporters why many inside the club consider him untouchable.

His comeback also strengthened his chances of making England’s World Cup squad. He also earned a place inside Thomas Tuchel’s preliminary 55-man list.

Chelsea still view Colwill as one of the foundations of the club’s future. He came through the Cobham academy and had impressive loan spells away from Stamford Bridge.

However, under Premier League financial regulations, selling an academy graduate would count as pure profit.

And with Real Madrid and Barcelona both watching closely, Chelsea may soon face a decision they never expected to consider.
