After weeks of drawn-out discussions and growing tension behind closed doors, it now looks like Real Madrid are about to put the finishing touches on one of their most anticipated summer deals.

The return of Alvaro Carreras has been in motion for some time, but negotiations with Benfica proved anything but simple.

According to Marca, both clubs are now finalizing the last details of the transfer that will see the Spanish full-back rejoin his former side in time for the Club World Cup.

The process has been complicated from the start. Real Madrid were determined to bring the player back, and Alvaro himself was equally eager to return.

However, Benfica were reluctant to let go without a fight. The Portuguese side held firm on the financial terms, refusing to accept anything less than the player’s full release clause.

Although Madrid pushed hard to lower the fee, Benfica stood their ground.

In the end, they only made one concession allowing Carreras to link up with Xabi Alonso’s squad in time for the Club World Cup. That alone was enough to break the deadlock.

Alvaro Carreras had hoped to avoid returning to pre-season training with Benfica and wanted the deal wrapped up last week.

But the delay in negotiations forced him to remain in Lisbon for longer than planned. Now, with an agreement almost complete, the wait is nearly over.

Once the paperwork is signed, Benfica are expected to publicly confirm the sale, outlining the exact amount received and any performance-related bonuses included in the deal.

For now, Madrid fans can look forward to welcoming back a player who once called the Bernabéu home and may soon play a key role in a new era under Alonso.
