It has been a positive if not perfect start to the Xabi Alonso era for Real Madrid.
They have won both of their opening La Liga games, without conceding a goal.
Although there hasn’t been a huge turnover, they are playing their first season without Luka Modric since 2011/12.
Many fans are hoping that they will sign a creative, controlling midfielder to replace the Croatian.
Despite his age, he still contributed a lot last season, and was one of their most creative players.
Another position that many think is needed is central defence.
Dean Huijsen was a very good signing, but Eder Militao has suffered two ACL’s in his career, and Antonio Rudiger is into his 30’s.
Whilst David Alaba simply cannot be relied upon anymore, even when fit.
Well, there seems to be a plan for that.
As per BILD via iMiaSanMia, Real Madrid are interested in signing Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano.
They state that the Spanish side are luring him with a lucrative contract to get him on a free transfer last summer.
Just like they did with Alaba.
According to the report, negotiations between Upamecano and Bayern are currently on hold.
The player’s position is clear: if the club fails to further accommodate him, from a financial point of view, a new contract is unlikely.
This would be a big shame for Bayern.
As he enters his prime years, Upamecano has been very, very consistent of late.
Since former defender Vincent Kompany arrived at Bayern, his performances have been extremely good.
His mobility has been crucial to Bayern stopping transitions with their very high line under Kompany.
Despite having to cover large spaces, he has barely put a foot wrong over the last year or so.
To lose him on a free especially would be a serious blow.
His demands may be high, but he is worth the pay rise. It will cost a lot more to replace him.
