Real Madrid see €150m bid for Julian Alvarez rejected

Atletico Madrid officially reject Real Madrid’s €150m bid for Julian Alvarez.

Some transfer stories escalate slowly.

This one went from rumour to official boardroom announcement in 48 hours.

And the manner in which it’s played out makes it one of the most extraordinary transfer standoffs in the history of Spanish football.

Atletico Madrid officially reject Real Madrid’s €150m bid for Julian Alvarez

According to Ben Jacobs, Real Madrid have officially announced that they submitted a formal offer of €150 million to Atletico Madrid for the federative rights of Julián Álvarez following a Board of Directors meeting.

The statement from Real Madrid read: “Real Madrid CF announces that, following the meeting of the Board of Directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julián Álvarez.”

Atlético Madrid issued their own statement in response — polite, firm and entirely immovable.

“After studying and evaluating it, Atletico de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause.”

However, that release clause is €500 million.

It is, to put it mildly, a gap that €150 million cannot bridge.

Yet, the decision to make this exchange public is almost entirely without precedent.

It is almost unheard of for a club to publicly confirm a failed bid of this magnitude.

Let alone for both clubs to release coordinated statements acknowledging a €150 million offer and its rejection simultaneously.

Therefore, the move reveals something significant about Real Madrid’s intent.

This was a public declaration.

Thus, Alvarez was indeed the mystery €150 million Galactico that Florentino Perez had been hinting at throughout his presidential campaign.

The player himself is currently with Argentina at the World Cup.

Yet, he has a contract until 2030.

Atletico hold all the contractual power and have no financial reason to sell below the release clause.
