In recent times, Real Madrid has secured some fantastic players as free agents. They have avoided paying a transfer fee to the clubs quite smartly.
With signing a centre-back on the agenda next summer, the Los Blancos are already exploring the free-agent market. One of their targets has already signed for Manchester City.
Yes, Madrid wanted to sign Marc Guehi. However, the England international was not the only player on their list. They have other players, too, that they can sign next summer.
The Los Blancos are looking at the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano as well. However, there is one player that Real Madrid would love to sign next summer.
The Spanish giants will have to pay a transfer fee for that player. With his contract expiring in 2027, the transfer fee would not have been huge.
However, the scenario has changed after Nico Schlotterbeck reportedly agreed on a new deal with Borussia Dortmund. So, this could have meant the end of Madrid’s pursuit of the player.
But, according to Defensa Central, Real Madrid are delighted that Nico Schlotterbeck has agreed to the new contract from Dortmund. This may surprise fans, but there is a smart logic behind Madrid’s stand.
If they wanted to sign the German defender next summer, Dortmund could have put pressure on Madrid by charging an inflated transfer fee.
On the other hand, Schlotterbeck has done something that has changed the entire scenario. He has included a release clause that will become active in the summer of 2027.
So now, Real Madrid know the price they have to pay for Nico Schlotterbeck, which will be around €60 million.
Thus, the Los Blancos will now target Schlotterbeck a year later than they planned. However, with a fixed price, they know they will have a slight edge over Dortmund during negotiations.
