AC Milan have taken an aggressive approach in the transfer market after appointing Ruben Amorim as their new manager.
The Rossoneri missed out on Champions League qualification for a second straight season, prompting a major rebuild ahead of the 2026–27 campaign.
The Italian giants have already backed their new head coach with significant investment.
Milan completed a €70 million move for Gonçalo Ramos, signed Samuele Ricci from Torino and continue working on a deal for Santiago Gimenez as they reshape the squad.
Liverpool have also entered a new era under Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot’s departure.
The Reds have strengthened their defence by signing Jeremy Jacquet, while several senior players have already left Anfield during a busy summer.
Attention has now turned to Liverpool’s defensive leader. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Ruben Amorim wants Virgil van Dijk as his dream signing to lead AC Milan’s backline.
However, the report adds that completing a deal will be extremely difficult because of the defender’s £400,000-a-week wages.
Also, Liverpool’s reluctance to lose another key centre-back after Ibrahima Konate’s departure could also be a key factor here.
Van Dijk will return to Liverpool after captaining the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, where his country’s campaign ended with a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32.
The Dutch defender has also entered the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract, creating uncertainty over his long-term future.
Even so, Milan acknowledge the financial challenge involved in trying to complete such a high-profile transfer.
The same report states that Sporting defender Gonçalo Inacio has emerged as an alternative option.
Amorim knows the 24-year-old well after working with him for four years in Lisbon before leaving Sporting.
While AC Milan continue assessing their defensive options, Van Dijk remains the club’s preferred target.
