Last season, it felt like Spurs didn’t have any (available) centre halves.
Teenage midfielder Archie Gray had to fill in during long periods of the season.
During a game at home to Newcastle United, Djed Spence played the second half in central defence.
Now, the situation feels much better.
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are fit, and they have a very able back up in Kevin Danso.
They have also signed Kota Takai from the J-League, and will hope to have Radu Dragusin back before the end of the year.
Whilst Ben Davies – who missed large periods of last season – is also still around, and is currently fit.
Owing to this improvement in depth, the club are now willing to sanction a loan for highly rated Luka Vuskovic.
As per Fabrizio Romano, the teenager is set to join newly promoted Bundesliga side Hamburg on loan.
The loan will be a simple loan, no option nor obligation, as Spurs have high hopes for him.
This will be a brilliant move for his development.
Playing in a competitive, top five league, and hopefully week in week out. All at a big club with a big stadium and fanbase.
Whilst Spurs did have injury woes last season, that was likely to be repeated to the same extent this season.
Especially with their increased depth.
So, a loan feels much better for Vuskovic’s progress than sitting on the bench, and playing a domestic cup game every now and then.
Back in June, the defender made his debut for the Croatia national team in a 5-1 win over Czechia in World Cup qualifying.
He will be hoping that with a good season, he will be part of their World Cup squad next summer.
It would be pretty cool to see 18-year old Vuskovic and 40-year old, former Spurs star, Luka Modric in the same squad.
