Sunderland are back in the Premier League.
They earned promotion after a 2-1 win against Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium in the EFL Championship playoff final.
Tom Watson’s 95th minute winner saw Sunderland earn a place back in the Premier League, after being 1-0 down.
In their first season back in England’s top flight since 2017, they will want to avoid the recent trend of promoted sides going straight back down.
The last two seasons have failed to see any teams survive after earning a return to the Premier League.
Sunderland were dealt a big blow this summer, with midfielder Jobe Bellingham following in his brothers footsteps in making the move to Borussia Dortmund.
For a fee of £32 million, he leaves the club along with playoff final hero Watson.
However, the club have also spent a total of £107.3 million on player arrivals.
This includes midfielders Habib Diarra (£30m), Enzo Le Fée (£19.3m) and Noah Sadiki (£17.5m).
The club have also bolstered their attack, with wingers Chemsdine Talbi (£19.5m) and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Simon Adingra (£21m).
They now look to be addition to their goalkeeper room.
Sunderland eye move for ex-Premier League champion
According to Mackem News, Sunderland have made an enquiry about Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Sunderland have also enquired about Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega.
He would add to a goalkeeper room featuring Anthony Patterson, who he would compete with for the number one spot.
With the imminent signing of James Trafford, Ortega is likely to see his minutes diminish further, if any at all.
He was the hero back in the 2023/24 campaign in a game between City and Tottenham Hotspur.
In the penultimate game of the season, he denied Son Heung-min the chance to grab a late draw and put rivals Arsenal top of the league.
Whilst he has had a battle to play more minutes at City, he will live in club folklore for that moment.
As Sunderland look to regain the Premier League stability they once possessed, Ortega could be someone they see as a great option for their team.
