Sunderland are back in the Premier League.

After beating Sheffield United 2-1 in a dramatic Wembley play off final, they will play in England’s top flight for the first time since 2017.

They have been very active in the transfer window.

This is despite receiving £43 million in player sales, including Jobe Bellingham’s £32 million move to Borussia Dortmund.

However, they have spent £136.1 million on player arrivals.

RC Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra remains most expensive purchase by Sunderland this window, with a fee of £30 million.

Their other signings include Brighton and Hove Albion winger Simon Adingra (£21 million) and former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka (£17.3 million).

Sunderland are attacking this transfer window.

Whilst they will need to be wary of Burnley’s expensive outgoings that still led to relegation a few years back, they have had to act given the lack of success of the previous two seasons of promoted sides.

Sunderland will need their defence to be up to scratch if they want to have any chance of survival.

Blackpool’s one and only season in the Premier League stands as one of the biggest examples of needing your back four and goalkeeper to be on top form if you want to survive.

Sunderland appear to have found a defensive option that they will hope can play a part in their Premier League survival.

According to reports, Sunderland are finalising a deal for Getafe defender Omar Alderete.

The fee is an intitial €12 million, which could increase thanks to add-ons.

Operating as both a left-back and centre-back, his versatility will be a welcomed one for managed Régis Le Bris.

He also brings a wealth of international experience, currently boasting 29 caps for the Paraguay national team.
