Xabi Alonso blocked deadline day move for Chelsea star

Chelsea manager intervened to prevent a player from leaving.

Chelsea completed a major squad overhaul during Xabi Alonso‘s first summer at Stamford Bridge, with substantial business on both sides of the market.

Enzo Fernandez completed a joint-British-record £125 million move to Manchester City during the final stages of the window.

Furthermore, Nicolas Jackson joined Aston Villa for £65 million, while Mykhaylo Mudryk moved to Tottenham on a season-long loan.

Chelsea also attempted to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, but the proposed £47 million deadline-day transfer ultimately collapsed.

Meanwhile, Alonso received significant reinforcements as Chelsea committed heavily to rebuilding his squad.

Morgan Rogers became their headline acquisition after completing a club-record £117 million transfer from Aston Villa.

Additionally, Maxence Lacroix arrived from Crystal Palace for £52 million, while Emiliano Martinez joined from Aston Villa.

Valentin Barco and Jordan Henderson were also added as Alonso reshaped his options for the new campaign.

However, the Chelsea manager also intervened to prevent another player from leaving during the closing stages of the window.

According to Voetbal International, Xabi Alonso blocked a possible deadline-day loan departure for Chelsea striker Emmanuel Emegha.

Chelsea signed Emegha for £21 million last year before the Netherlands international spent the 2025–26 campaign on loan at Strasbourg.

The 23-year-old scored eight goals across 18 appearances during his season with the French club.

Emegha subsequently scored during Chelsea’s pre-season matches against Crawley and Bromley before suffering a hamstring injury.

Consequently, the injury ruled him out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia.

He then missed the Premier League victories over Fulham and Brighton but returned to the bench against Luton Town.

Clubs from Italy and Turkey showed interest in taking Emegha on loan during the final weeks of the window. Nevertheless, Alonso decided against allowing the striker to leave Chelsea temporarily.

Joao Pedro currently operates as Alonso’s first-choice striker, with Danny Welbeck also available after scoring against Luton.
