The United States of America President Donald Trump has once again made headlines after sending a warning to Iran over their 2026 FIFA World Cup participation.
Iran qualified for the competition after finishing top of their Asian qualifying group and were drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
However, rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran have created serious doubts about whether the team will appear at the tournament.
Trump addressed the situation directly on his Truth Social platform. The US president warned that Iran’s players could face danger if they travelled to North America for the competition. Trump wrote:
“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
His statement came shortly after Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, suggested that the national team should not take part in the tournament because of the ongoing conflict.
Donyamali delivered a strong message when discussing the possibility of participation. He said during an interview with IRIB Sports Network (via the BBC):
“Given that this corrupt government has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances do we have the appropriate conditions to participate in the World Cup.”
The comments arrived as tensions in the region continue to escalate following military strikes and retaliatory attacks between the two sides.
If Iran withdraws, FIFA will need to decide quickly which nation could replace them in the tournament. Transfer News Live has already reported the team that can replace Iran in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA now faces an uncomfortable situation. The United States, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup, which will begin on June 11.
