Stadium withdraws from hosting FIFA World Cup games

A World Cup stadium has unexpectedly pulled out of hosting duties ahead of the tournament. The United States of America, Canada, and Mexico will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The preparation for the grand quadrennial tournament is in full swing now. A total of 48 countries will participate in the tournament, making it the biggest event in the history of this competition.

Already, there is a question mark over the participation of Iran due to the ongoing geopolitical issues with the US, Israel, and Iran.

Also, there are chances that another country might replace Iran if they decide not to participate in the tournament. Now, a stadium has pulled out from hosting games of the World Cup.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be one of the most unique in history. The reason is that the tournament will take place across multiple continents.

Spain, Portugal and Morocco will host the majority of matches. Also, South America will host some special fixtures to mark FIFA’s centenary. Many stadiums were selected as part of the hosting plan.

Furthermore, Spain alone had ten venues lined up to stage matches, with clubs and local authorities preparing for upgrades to meet FIFA’s strict requirements.

However, one key condition involves stadium capacity, with venues needing to hold at least 40,000 spectators. Now, this has created a major issue for one selected stadium.

The Riazor stadium of Deportivo La Coruna holds just over 32,000 seats. So, they needed significant redevelopment work to meet FIFA standards.

Plans were explored to expand the venue to around 48,000, but those proposals raised concerns. Club officials and local authorities began to weigh the financial risks.

In a joint decision involving the club, the city council and the provincial authorities, the venue has officially withdrawn from hosting matches at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the withdrawal, authorities have confirmed their commitment to modernising the Riazor.
