Tension continues to grow ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, this time, the focus is not on football. Instead, it revolves around politics, logistics, and growing uncertainty over participation.
Iran have pushed hard for a major change to facilitate their participation, and naturally, it has caught global attention. The country made a clear request to FIFA.
Iranian officials want their group-stage matches moved away from the United States. Their argument remains simple.
They believe safety concerns and visa complications could affect their ability to compete without disruption.
Also, Donald Trump’s comment created more complications. The US President suggested that although Iran would be welcome, their “life and safety” could not be guaranteed.
As a result, they wanted to play their World Cup matches elsewhere. More specifically, they have proposed Mexico as an alternative host for their fixtures.
Mexico are the joint-host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with the USA and Canada. Consequently, Iranian authorities stepped up their stance.
Ambassador Abolfazl Psedniddeh openly stated that the United States is not cooperating on visa matters.
At the same time, Iranian FA chief Mehdi Taj reinforced the message, making it clear that Iran do not intend to travel under such uncertainty. Naturally, this led to claims of ongoing talks.
According to the Mirror, Iran insisted they were in discussions with FIFA to resolve the issue. Now, FIFA have responded directly.
FIFA expect all teams to follow the official schedule announced in December 2025. That decision carries major implications.
The current plan includes 104 matches, spread across multiple venues, with thousands of tickets already sold. Any late change would create serious logistical problems.
Iran are set to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand in Group G, with matches scheduled in cities like Los Angeles and Seattle. At this stage, FIFA’s position is clear.
