A Championship club could be heading towards serious trouble. The situation has raised concerns at a crucial stage of the season.
However, the issue is not related to performances on the pitch. It comes from off-field matters that could have major consequences.
Meanwhile, the Championship club are already struggling in the league. They sit 20th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.
At the same time, pressure is building as the season nears its end. Every point now carries huge importance. But now, a new threat has emerged.
According to The Telegraph, West Bromwich Albion have been charged by the EFL. The case relates to alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules during the 2024-25 campaign.
However, the offences are not believed to be severe. Still, the potential punishments are significant. They could face a transfer ban, a financial fine, or even a points deduction.
Meanwhile, the timing of any sanction could prove decisive. Usually, penalties are applied in the following season. However, the club are reportedly trying to delay any punishment until then.
If the points deduction is applied immediately, the consequences could be severe. It would place them in serious danger of relegation.
At the same time, the club have already endured a difficult campaign. Ryan Mason was sacked in January, with the team struggling in 18th place.
His successor, Eric Ramsay, then failed to win any of his nine matches. He was dismissed after just six weeks in charge.
Meanwhile, caretaker boss James Morrison has tried to stabilise the situation. But the club remain in a precarious position.
There are also financial concerns. The club’s latest accounts show £53 million in loans that must be repaid. At the same time, their Premier League parachute payments ended in 2024.
West Brom now have 14 days to respond to the charge. By then, only one game will remain in the season.
Meanwhile, Leicester were deducted six points earlier this season for similar breaches. So, with a potential points deduction looming, West Brom’s fight for survival has become dangerous.
