Barcelona have already begun reshaping their defensive plans ahead of the summer transfer window.
The club initially prioritised Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, but concerns over his valuation have forced them to explore alternative options.
So, they are now looking at the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur’s situation creating a potential opportunity.
The North London side are still in the relegation zone and facing a crucial final stretch of the season. Their struggles have raised serious doubts over the future of several senior figures within the squad.
Relegation would significantly weaken Tottenham’s position in negotiations and could activate clauses that make departures more realistic.
Barcelona sporting director Deco is leading the process, while Hansi Flick has backed the move as the club look to bring in a defender capable of making an immediate impact.
According to SPORT, Barcelona have already made contact with the representatives of Cristian Romero as they position themselves early for a potential summer deal. The timing is significant.
Romero will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury during Tottenham’s recent defeat, which has added further uncertainty around his future at the club.
Despite that setback, his reputation remains strong. The Argentina international has been a key figure since arriving in England.
And his aggressive style, leadership and experience at the highest level continue to attract interest from top European sides. Now, Barcelona are not alone in the race.
Atletico Madrid remain interested, with Diego Simeone a long-term admirer after failing to secure his signature last summer.
That interest could lead to a direct battle between the two Spanish clubs in the coming months.
With Tottenham’s future still unclear, Romero’s situation is now one to watch closely as the summer window approaches.
