Manchester United’s turbulent last few seasons have seen several senior players come under intense scrutiny.
However, few received criticism as harsh as the comments directed at Casemiro during the difficult stages of the 2023-24 campaign.
The Brazilian midfielder arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid in 2022 with huge expectations after winning almost everything possible in Spain.
He immediately became one of the leaders in Erik ten Hag’s side and helped the Red Devils win both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his stay.
However, things quickly became complicated during his second season at the club. One of the lowest moments came after Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace.
Following that match, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher delivered a brutal assessment of the midfielder’s performances. Carragher said:
“I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level.
“The next two league games and the cup final, then he should be thinking, I need to go to the MLS or Saudi. This has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time.”
“I always remember the saying ‘leave the football before the football leaves you’. The football has left him.”
Now, Casemiro has finally responded to those comments while speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube Channel. Responding to Jamie Carragher’s statement, Casemiro said:
“So… It’s your opinion. I respect your opinion. I don’t like it because it’s disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to me.”
Meanwhile, the Brazilian insisted that mentality helped him survive difficult moments at Manchester United, especially when criticism intensified around him.
The midfielder will now leave Manchester United at the end of the season after helping the club secure Champions League football once again.
