Thibaut Courtois has now officially become the owner of a football club as the Real Madrid goalkeeper continues expanding his interests away from the pitch.
However, this is not the first time the Belgian shot stopper stepped into football ownership.
Back in February, Transfer News Live revealed that Courtois had purchased a minority stake in French side Le Mans through his sports investment company NXTPLAY.
The Real Madrid star joined an impressive ownership group at the Ligue 2 club alongside tennis legend Novak Djokovic and former Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen.
Le Mans later earned promotion and quickly became known by some supporters as the “French Wrexham” because of its celebrity-backed project.
Now, Courtois has made another move in football ownership.
The Real Madrid goalkeeper has officially become a co-owner of Spanish lower-division side CD Extremadura through his NXTPLAY investment platform.
The club have recently secured their fourth consecutive promotion. They will now compete in the Primera Federacion, the third tier of Spanish football.
Courtois co-founded NXTPLAY alongside entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila and continues growing the company’s presence in football.
Despite the investment, current president Daniel Tafur will remain responsible for the club’s sporting and institutional operations.
CD Extremadura are based in Almendralejo and are considered the spiritual successor to former professional side Extremadura UD.
This latest investment marks NXTPLAY’s second major football project within the last few months.
Courtois’ move also reflects a growing trend among active footballers investing in clubs during their playing careers.
Several major stars have recently entered football ownership, including Courtois’ Real Madrid teammates Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.
Meanwhile, the Belgian goalkeeper continues playing an important role for Real Madrid despite increasing activity away from the pitch.
Courtois remains one of the most respected goalkeepers in world football. Now, he appears determined to build a long-term future in football ownership as well.
