Manchester United face growing uncertainty over Michael Carrick following their disastrous start to the season.
Carrick earned the permanent position in May after guiding United to third during his interim spell.
However, United have managed only two victories from their opening 11 matches across all competitions. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League with seven points.
Pressure has intensified following a seven-match winless sequence and mounting problems inside the dressing room.
Lisandro Martinez expressed frustration following the 1-1 draw against Leeds United. United then suffered another damaging setback during their Champions League trip to Como.
Carrick’s side lost 4-1 in Italy, with Bruno Fernandes subsequently questioning his manager’s tactical approach.
United are now considering possible successors as Carrick fights to reverse their alarming decline.
According to iNews, Manchester United view Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as a strong candidate for the Old Trafford job. Emery has built an impressive record during his time at Villa Park.
The 54-year-old guided Aston Villa to Europa League glory last season. That success represented his fifth Europa League triumph, more than any other manager.
Emery previously won the competition three times with Sevilla before lifting it again with Villarreal. He also reached the final during his spell as Arsenal manager.
United therefore see significant experience and European pedigree in Emery as they assess their managerial options.
However, Carrick remains in charge and is expected to oversee the upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth.
The former United midfielder urgently needs a positive result after overseeing an 18.2 per cent win rate this season.
Emery remains under contract at Aston Villa, where his recent achievements have strengthened his reputation considerably.
United have yet to make a managerial change, but their difficult start has increased scrutiny around Carrick.
Emery has now emerged among the leading candidates should the Old Trafford hierarchy eventually decide to replace him.
