Manchester United face increasing uncertainty over Michael Carrick after a disastrous opening to the season. The Red Devils sit 13th in the Premier League after struggling badly for consistency.
United have suffered defeats against Hull City and Manchester City this season. They also exited the Carabao Cup against Brighton after surrendering a two-goal advantage.
Their European form has added further pressure on Carrick and his coaching staff. United followed a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid with a humiliating 4-1 loss at Como.
That result extended their winless run across all competitions to seven matches. Carrick consequently faces growing questions over his position just months after receiving the permanent job.
United have started considering possible successors should they eventually decide to make a managerial change.
According to talkSPORT, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler would not be interested in replacing Carrick at Manchester United. The 33-year-old has admirers within the United hierarchy following Brighton’s impressive start this season.
Hurzeler has guided Brighton to fourth in the Premier League after five victories from seven matches. His side have also scored 23 league goals.
However, the German does not want to leave Brighton for Old Trafford if the position becomes available. Hurzeler recently extended his Brighton contract until 2029, strengthening his commitment to the club.
United therefore have several other managerial options under consideration. Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as a leading candidate and is currently available after leaving Germany.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery previously featured in United’s recruitment process before Carrick secured the permanent position.
Eddie Howe and Al Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi are also of interest. United also appreciate Como manager Cesc Fabregas, whose side inflicted their latest Champions League defeat.
Antonio Conte remains another possible name, although Juventus could provide competition for the former Chelsea manager.
Carrick remains in charge for now, but United’s seven-match winless sequence continues to increase the pressure.
Hurzeler’s position removes one admired candidate from their immediate options should United decide a managerial change is necessary.
