Manchester United face growing uncertainty over Michael Carrick following another damaging result in Europe. Carrick’s side have struggled throughout the opening months of the 2026–27 campaign.
United sit 13th in the Premier League after an inconsistent domestic start. They have also won just two of their 11 matches across all competitions.
Their problems intensified significantly during Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Como. United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat, extending their winless run to seven matches.
That followed another European setback against Atletico Madrid. The club have continued to support Carrick despite their alarming decline.
However, Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth could now prove crucial for his immediate future.
United are beginning to consider potential alternatives should their position on Carrick change.
According to The Telegraph, Julian Nagelsmann would be a leading candidate for Manchester United if they decide to sack Carrick.
The 39-year-old would also listen to an approach from United and wants to manage in the Premier League.
Nagelsmann is currently available after leaving his position as Germany head coach following the World Cup.
United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell also has an existing relationship with Nagelsmann.
The pair previously worked together at RB Leipzig. Vivell was also Chelsea’s technical director when they considered Nagelsmann in 2023. United have other potential candidates on their radar.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has attracted admiration, although United have previously viewed him as a future option.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery would represent another expensive appointment. Eddie Howe could also enter consideration because of his availability.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is understood to admire the former Newcastle United manager. Representatives have also pushed Antonio Conte towards United, but he does not feature prominently in their current thinking.
Carrick remains in charge and signed a two-year contract during the summer. However, United’s worsening results have placed his position under increasing scrutiny.
Another damaging result against Bournemouth could force the hierarchy to seriously consider their options, with Nagelsmann emerging as a leading candidate.
