Southampton expelled from EFL Championship play-off final.

World Cup manager set to be sacked after getting thrashed in opening game

Some stories have an ending that feels almost inevitable once all the details are known.

This is one of those stories.

And the conclusion arrived on Tuesday evening in the most dramatic fashion English football’s second tier has ever seen.

Southampton expelled from EFL Championship play-off final

According to The Guardian, an independent disciplinary commission has removed Southampton from the 2026 EFL Championship play-off final, ordering that Middlesbrough be reinstated in their place to face Hull City at Wembley on Saturday, May 23.

The club have also been handed a four-point deduction, to be applied to the 2026/27 EFL Championship table, alongside a formal reprimand in respect of all charges.

The scale of what Southampton admitted is extraordinary.

When the initial spying allegation emerged, Southampton insisted they needed adequate time to review the matter and respond properly.

What followed as investigators dug deeper was far worse than a single incident.

Southampton admitted multiple breaches of EFL regulations.

Covering not just the Middlesbrough incident, but also fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025 and Ipswich Town in April 2026.

The club ultimately admitted breaches of regulations requiring clubs to act with the utmost good faith.

The commission moved at extraordinary speed given the circumstances, conscious that the Wembley final was fast approaching.

Southampton retain the right to appeal.

Parties are working to try to resolve any appeal by Wednesday May 20, with the outcome potentially resulting in a further change to Saturday’s fixture.

But as it stands, the club that eliminated Middlesbrough in the semi-final have been stripped of their place at Wembley.

Now they face Hull City at Wembley, for a place in the Premier League, in the most remarkable circumstances English football has witnessed in years.

For Southampton, a club already relegated from the top flight and trying to rebuild, the consequences extend far beyond Saturday.

A story that will be told for decades.

And Premier League dreams in ruin.
