Some farewells in football carry a weight that goes beyond statistics.
They mark the end of something.
A team that redefined what was possible in English football.
Bayern Munich lead race for John Stones as Manchester City legend leaves as a free agent
According to the Daily Mail, Bayern Munich are seriously considering a move for John Stones, with sources indicating that behind-the-scenes work has already begun to try to persuade the 31-year-old that the Allianz Arena is the right next step.
The key factor is a familiar face in the dugout.
Vincent Kompany, who managed Burnley before taking the Bayern Munich job, shared a dressing room with Stones at Manchester City for years.
Harry Kane’s presence at the club adds another persuasive voice.
A fellow England international who could sell Stones on both the project and the lifestyle.
Should Kim Min-Jae depart this summer, a void opens that Stones could fill in a smart, cost-effective way.
The competition for his signature is substantial, with top European clubs sniffing around.
A sentimental return to Everton, has been discussed, though salary demands are said to make that option unrealistic.
Guardiola spoke warmly about making the trip to sign Stones a decade ago.
A moment that marked the beginning of one of the most successful partnerships between manager and player in Premier League history.
That chapter is now closed.
At 31, with his body having been tested repeatedly by injury throughout his career, Stones enters this next phase knowing the choice of club matters enormously.
He needs regular football.
And he needs the right environment to get the best from what remains of an elite career.
Bayern Munich believe they can offer all three.
And Kompany, the man who once led Manchester City’s defence alongside him, is already working to make that conversation happen.
