Crystal Palace created history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the Conference League final on Wednesday night.
The victory marked a major achievement for the London club as they secured European silverware in memorable fashion.
Meanwhile, the triumph also helped one Palace player achieve something that no footballer had managed before in European competition.
The Eagles needed a disciplined performance against their Spanish opponents, and they eventually got the job done in Leipzig.
Palace defended strongly throughout the contest and protected their narrow lead until the final whistle. Several Palace players impressed during the club’s Conference League journey this season.
However, one player’s achievement now stands above the rest because of his involvement with another side earlier in another European competition.
Interestingly, Aston Villa also enjoyed European success this season. Unai Emery’s side defeated Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul last week.
That result has now created a remarkable situation involving one player connected to both clubs.
Crystal Palace star Evann Guessand has become the first player in history to win two different European trophies within the same season.
Guessand joined Crystal Palace from Aston Villa in January, with the agreement reportedly including an option to make the move permanent.
The Ivory Coast international played an important role during Palace’s Conference League campaign. He made five appearances in the competition and also scored one goal before the final.
Meanwhile, Guessand also featured heavily for Aston Villa earlier in the season. The 24-year-old played seven Europa League league-phase matches and scored two goals for Villa as well.
Thus, after Villa lifted the Europa League and Palace secured the Conference League title, Guessand became eligible for winners’ medals from both competitions.
UEFA award 50 gold medals to the winners of both the Europa League and Conference League.
So, because Guessand played and scored for both clubs during their European campaigns, he is now expected to receive medals from each side.
As a result, the Crystal Palace attacker has now secured a unique place in European football history.
