Premier League striker wants Manchester United move in January

There is an acceptance within United’s hierarchy that they could have done more to strengthen attacking depth in the summer.

Manchester United could look to strengthen their attacking options when the January transfer window opens, with a Premier League striker reportedly interested in making the move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have struggled with a lack of options in the centre-forward position this season, particularly following Benjamin Sesko’s injury problems.

The Slovenian was expected to play an important role in Michael Carrick’s attack, but his absence has left United without a recognised number nine for a significant part of the campaign.

It has raised questions about the club’s decision not to bring in additional attacking reinforcements during the summer transfer window, with United now potentially looking to address the situation in January.

And according to talkSPORT, Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta would be keen on joining Manchester United when the transfer window reopens.

The 29-year-old French international has previously been considered by United and could represent a realistic option as Carrick looks to strengthen his squad.

talkSPORT sources have indicated that Mateta would welcome a move to Old Trafford, with his contract situation potentially making a transfer possible.

The striker’s current deal with Crystal Palace expires at the end of the season, and he has reportedly shown little interest in signing an extension.

That could leave Palace facing a difficult decision in January, with the club potentially forced to sell rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has established himself as a proven Premier League goalscorer during his time at Selhurst Park, making him an attractive option for a United side struggling for depth in attack.

However, the Frenchman has also experienced injury problems this season, playing just 92 minutes of Premier League football because of a hamstring issue.

That could be a consideration for United, particularly given that their interest in signing another striker has been driven partly by Sesko’s ongoing absence.

The report also claims there is an acceptance within United’s hierarchy that the club could have done more to strengthen its attacking depth during the summer.

While Mateta is viewed as one of the more viable options, there has been no indication that a formal offer has been submitted or that an agreement is close.

Nevertheless, with the January transfer window approaching and United continuing to struggle for options up front, the possibility of signing an experienced Premier League striker could become increasingly appealing.

For Jean-Philippe Mateta, meanwhile, a move to Old Trafford would offer an opportunity to take the next step in his career, with his contract situation potentially giving United an opening to secure his signature.
