Paris Saint-Germain beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties to become only the second club ever to retain the UEFA Champions League.
Only Real Madrid had accomplished the feat before and the Parisians made history when Gabriel skied his penalty over the bar in the shoot out.
As is typical in those circumstances, wild celebrations ensued with players and fans unable to hide their emotions over this historic feat.
Those celebrations continued long into the night and outside the stadium both in Budapest, where the Champions League final was held, and back home in Paris where fans were taking to the streets to commemorate the moment.
But it appears that many of the celebrations have gotten out of fans and turned into violence.
BBC report that there have been more than 400 arrests after clashes between football fans and police across France.
Disruptions across public transport in Paris after the final whistle was blown meant that thousands of police officers were deployed across the city to bring calm.
Unfortunately, it seems that did not help.
The broadcaster reports that several police officers were injured as fireworks and flares were set off in the city centre.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds and 416 people had been arrested in the early hours of Sunday, including 280 people in Paris.
Footage appearing online shows electric bikes burning on roads and people smashing the glass of at least one shopfront.
Police reported that six vehicles, two businesses and a bus shelter were damaged during the unrest.
There were similar scenes last year when PSG beat Inter Milan, with two people dying on that occasion.
It appears that the police forces were prepared for a repeat this time around and had a plan in place to arrest any offenders.
