Revealed: Southampton spygate messages leaked

WhatsApp messages reveal how Southampton’s spying operation was run.

Some scandals look different when you read the messages.

Not accusations.

But the actual words.

Sent before anyone knew they’d be read out in a hearing.

However, the Southampton spygate story has taken a significant new turn.

And the WhatsApp exchanges now made public are deeply uncomfortable reading for everyone involved.

WhatsApp messages reveal how Southampton’s spying operation was run

According to the BBC, a League Arbitration Panel report has detailed the WhatsApp exchanges that show exactly how the club’s spying campaign was orchestrated.

Yet, the picture that emerges is not one of rogue individuals acting alone.

And the messages make the human cost of that pressure viscerally clear.

Thus, the intern was forced to sent back updates, and photos of the opposition to the coaching staff.

A predicted Oxford line-up was subsequently prepared based on his observations, including a section entitled “key messages” built from what he had seen.

Yet, the response from his superiors was telling.

A WhatsApp message sent from an analyst to the junior analyst intern read: “Try and make out as much as you can please. You legend. Manager loved it.”

The intern was then asked to carry out a second mission, this time against Ipswich Town.

However, multiple people inside Southampton knew this was wrong.

At least one said so explicitly.

Yet, they were overruled.

Southampton then attempted to delete images of the intern from the internet.

An act of concealment that the panel noted as evidence of the club’s awareness of their wrongdoing.

Eckert denied viewing any footage and insisted the information gathered had no impact on match preparation.

The panel’s written reasons suggest they found that position difficult to reconcile with a WhatsApp trail that showed the manager personally receiving analysis based on the illegally obtained observations.

Thus, Southampton pled guilty to spying on three Championship clubs.

They were expelled from the play-offs.

Therefore, a four-point deduction will be applied to next season’s Championship tally.

The appeal failed.

And now, the messages that made all of it inevitable are in the public domain.
