Confirmed: Brighton beat Chelsea to signing of winger

Brighton confirm Zadok Yohanna signing as 18-year-old Nigerian winger chooses Amex over Chelsea.

Some transfer stories feel like they have an obvious ending.

Chelsea bid accepted.

Newcastle bid accepted.

The player will choose the biggest club.

Except that’s not what happened.

In one of the most surprising conclusions to a transfer saga this summer, this superstar is heading to Brighton.

Brighton confirm Zadok Yohanna signing as 18-year-old Nigerian winger chooses Amex over Chelsea

According to The New York Times, Brighton have confirmed the signing of Yohanna from Swedish club AIK, completing a deal that surpasses AIK’s previous outgoing transfer record and represents one of the most significant pieces of recruitment the south coast club have managed in recent years.

The fee is understood to be in the region of £20 million.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle United had matching bids accepted by AIK earlier this week.

The choice, ultimately, came down to Yohanna himself.

And he chose Brighton.

That decision makes complete sense when you understand the club’s track record.

Brighton have become one of the most respected development environments for young attacking talent in European football.

The 18-year-old was born in Bauchi State in northern Nigeria, leaving his family as a teenager in pursuit of a football career.

AIK spotted him and signed him on his 18th birthday in June 2025, paying an initial €750,000.

Less than a year later, he’s heading to the Premier League for approximately £21 million.

A return that comfortably breaks the record for an outgoing transfer from Swedish football, surpassing the fee AIK received for Alexander Isak when he joined Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

The “Nigerian Neymar” comparison has followed him since he arrived in Stockholm.

It’s not flattery for its own sake.

Yohanna plays primarily as a right winger despite being left-footed.

Cutting inside onto his stronger foot in the mould of Mohamed Salah and Arjen Robben.

And his combination of close control, direct running and clinical finishing has drawn 32 scouts to a single Allsvenskan match in recent months.

Five goals and four assists in 18 senior appearances for AIK.

Remarkable numbers for a player still learning what professional football demands.

For Brighton, this represents exactly the kind of signing that has defined their identity in the transfer market.

And for Chelsea and Newcastle, it’s the one that got away.

Brighton didn’t offer more money.

They offered something more important, a path.
