Nottingham Forest officially release former Manchester City star

Nottingham Forest have officially confirmed another senior departure following the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

The club continue reshaping the squad after an impressive campaign which included a strong Europa League run and Premier League survival.

Forest reached the Europa League semi-finals before Aston Villa ended their European journey.

Meanwhile, the club also secured safety domestically despite several injury problems across the season. Now, Nottingham Forest have confirmed the departure of a former Manchester City player.

The club officially announced that goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will leave the City Ground after the expiry of his short-term contract this month.

Goalkeepers Stefan Ortega and Angus Gunn, defender Willy Boly and on-loan striker Lorenzo Lucca will all depart the club at the end of June.

Forest originally signed Ortega from Manchester City during February 2026 in a deal worth around £500,000.

The club brought the experienced goalkeeper to the City Ground after John Victor suffered a season-ending injury.

Despite spending only a short period at Forest, Ortega still played an important role during the closing months of the campaign.

The German goalkeeper made 10 appearances across all competitions, including seven matches in the Europa League.

Ortega also kept three clean sheets during Forest’s European run. He helped the club progress past FC Porto in the quarter-finals.

The goalkeeper made his debut only five days after arriving at the club during a 3-1 defeat against Leeds United on February 6.

Before joining Forest, Ortega built a strong reputation during four successful years at Manchester City.

The goalkeeper made 56 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable backup goalkeepers.

Ortega also collected multiple major trophies during his spell at the Etihad Stadium. He won Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

One of his most memorable moments arrived in May 2024. The German produced a crucial save against Son Heung-min during Manchester City’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

That save played a huge role in helping City secure a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Ortega now leaves Nottingham Forest as a free agent after another short but important contribution in English football.
