England enter the 2026 World Cup with growing optimism under Thomas Tuchel. The German has transformed the national team since taking charge in January 2025.
His appointment came with a clear objective. The Football Association wanted a manager capable of delivering World Cup success. Tuchel has strengthened his position through an impressive run of results.
England won all eight of their World Cup qualifying matches under his leadership. The Three Lions scored 22 goals and did not concede once during that campaign.
That achievement created a piece of history. No European nation had previously completed a multi-game World Cup qualifying campaign with a perfect record and no goals conceded.
Tuchel also enjoyed a remarkable first year in charge. He won nine of his opening ten matches across all competitions.
The German matched Glenn Hoddle’s historic start and recorded nine clean sheets during that run. Only a friendly defeat against Senegal prevented a perfect record.
Preparations for the World Cup have continued throughout 2026. England recorded a draw against Uruguay, suffered a narrow loss to Japan and beat both New Zealand and Costa Rica.
Those results have helped build confidence ahead of group-stage matches against Croatia, Ghana and Panama.
Against that backdrop, the FA recently made a major decision regarding Tuchel’s future. Earlier this year, the governing body agreed a new two-year contract with the England manager.
The extension means Tuchel’s deal now runs until the end of Euro 2028. However, the agreement contains an important condition.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has confirmed that performance clauses exist within Tuchel’s contract.
Speaking at England’s World Cup media centre in Kansas City, Bullingham refused to reveal specific details.
However, he made it clear that performance-related conditions form part of the agreement. He said (via the BBC):
“There’s performance clauses in every single contract at the FA, but I’m not going into any detail of what they are.”
Bullingham also addressed questions regarding possible exit clauses. When asked whether Tuchel could activate a break clause, he gave a straightforward response:
“We can hold him to the contract.”
For now, England’s focus remains firmly on the tournament. However, confirmation of performance clauses shows the FA still expects high standards despite committing to Tuchel until 2028.
