The Football Association has confirmed a significant managerial decision, announcing that a new contract has been agreed to secure the future of one of England’s national team coaches.

The announcement comes at an important time for international football, with England preparing for another period of major tournaments and expectations remaining high following recent successes on the international stage.

With the FA looking to build on those achievements, retaining the right leadership has become an important part of its plans for the coming years.

And on Monday, the governing body confirmed that an agreement had been reached to extend the tenure of one of its most successful managers.

England football officially confirmed Sarina Wiegman has signed a new contract to remain in charge of the England women’s national team until the conclusion of Euro 2029.

The Dutch coach, who has led the Lionesses since September 2021, had been contracted until after next summer’s Women’s World Cup but has now committed her future for a further two years.

The announcement was made through an official statement on England Football’s website, confirming that Wiegman will oversee another European Championship campaign.

Wiegman has enjoyed remarkable success since taking charge, guiding England to their first major women’s international trophy at Euro 2022 before reaching the World Cup final in 2023.

She then led the Lionesses to a second consecutive European Championship triumph in 2025, further cementing her status as one of the most successful coaches in international football.

Speaking about her decision to extend her stay, Wiegman said: “I’m so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football.”

The 56-year-old also expressed her appreciation for the support she has received from the FA and her determination to continue building on the team’s achievements.

“I have such a strong desire to see what more we can achieve together with our amazing fans,” she added.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham welcomed the agreement, describing Sarina Wiegman’s impact on English football as immense.

“Sarina is an incredible coach, with an unparalleled record in major tournaments and I am so happy to continue to work with her for the next EURO cycle,” Bullingham said.

The immediate priority for Wiegman remains qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

England face Ukraine in a two-legged qualification play-off, with the decisive second leg scheduled for Wembley Stadium on December 5.

Should the Lionesses qualify, Sarina Wiegman will have another opportunity to guide England to a World Cup title after finishing runners-up to Spain in 2023.

Her new contract also ensures she will remain in charge for Euro 2029 in Germany, giving the FA continuity as England attempt to extend their remarkable run of success in the women’s game.
