The 2026 FIFA World Cup has kicked off in North America. Already, there have been several memorable encounters. However, one of them sparked an unwanted controversy.
The Netherlands and Japan produced one of the most entertaining matches of the World Cup so far with a dramatic 2-2 draw in Dallas.
After a goalless first half, Virgil van Dijk headed the Oranje into the lead from a Ryan Gravenberch cross.
However, Japan responded quickly through Keito Nakamura before Crysencio Summerville restored the Dutch advantage with a stunning finish.
Japan refused to surrender and eventually found an equaliser in the 89th minute when Daichi Kamada scored following a dangerous corner.
While the match generated plenty of discussion, much of the attention afterwards focused on comments made during the television coverage.
Former Real Madrid and Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart sparked controversy while working as a pundit for NOS TV after analysing Micky van de Ven’s role in Japan’s late equaliser.
According to reports, Van der Vaart said Japanese players “all look alike” while discussing the defensive mistake.
The remark immediately attracted criticism from fans, media outlets and anti-discrimination organisations.
The backlash eventually prompted Van der Vaart to issue a public apology. He said (via The Athletic):
“It was never my intention to offend, hurt, or discriminate against anyone. I oppose racism in all its forms and have respect for people of every background, ethnicity, and culture.
“I understand that some people may have found my words offensive or hurtful. I sincerely regret that.
“If my comment has caused pain or upset, I would like to offer my heartfelt apologies. That was never my intention.”
Van der Vaart remains one of the most recognisable figures in Dutch football. The former midfielder joined Real Madrid from Hamburger SV in 2008 and spent two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite facing uncertainty following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, he fought his way back into the team before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur in 2010.
