Ligue 2 player has accident during heatwave and declared brain dead

France now faces growing pressure as extreme temperatures continue across the country.

France is battling an intense heatwave that has caused widespread disruption across the country.

Authorities have placed fifty-four departments under a red heatwave alert as temperatures continue to climb. Large parts of the country recorded temperatures above 40°C this week.

Some areas reached 43.3°C, while cities such as Paris endured record-breaking June nights with temperatures remaining above 24°C.

The extreme weather has already affected daily life. More than one thousand schools have closed, while pollution concerns have prompted restrictions on road traffic in Paris and Lyon.

Meanwhile, officials continue to hold crisis meetings as hospitals prepare for more heat-related illnesses. The heatwave has also led to a rise in water-related accidents.

Authorities reported around twenty accidental drownings over the weekend as people searched for relief from the soaring temperatures.

One of those incidents involved a 21-year-old Ligue 2 football player near Lyon on Monday evening, according to BFM.

The footballer entered a prohibited section of the Rhône River with friends. The area is known for dangerous undercurrents and strong currents.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. Rescue teams saved and resuscitated the player’s companions.

However, they found the footballer in critical condition after pulling him from the water. Doctors later declared him brain-dead following the accident.

The tragedy has intensified concerns about public safety during the ongoing heatwave. Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid dangerous swimming locations and follow official guidance.
