Newcastle United plan ambitious move for Manchester City midfielder

Newcastle could prioritise other midfield targets as Howe continues rebuilding his squad following Tonali’s departure.

Newcastle United endured a difficult 2025-26 Premier League campaign as they finished in the bottom half of the table.

Now, Eddie Howe faces a major rebuilding job following some high-profile departures during the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Magpies sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million, leaving a major gap in their midfield.

Also, Anthony Gordon completed an £80 million move to Barcelona as Newcastle sanctioned another significant departure this summer.

Newcastle have responded by signing Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim alongside Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Kieran Thompson.

However, the Magpies still need senior reinforcements after losing out to Aston Villa in the race for Johan Manzambi.

They also saw a £46 million verbal offer for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall rejected as they continued searching for additions.

As a result, Newcastle have looked towards Manchester City while considering options to strengthen Howe’s midfield before next season.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have been linked with an ambitious move for Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders this summer.

The Netherlands international joined Manchester City from AC Milan for £46 million ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

Reijnders registered 14 goal contributions in 50 appearances across all competitions during his first season at Manchester City.

However, he struggled for regular starts towards the end of the campaign, starting only three of City’s final 12 matches.

The 27-year-old also impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup before their round-of-16 elimination against Morocco.

However, Manchester City are keen to strengthen their midfield rather than lose more options during the summer transfer window.

Pep Guardiola has departed, while Bernardo Silva has also left the club and uncertainty remains around Rodri’s future.

Therefore, new manager Enzo Maresca wants to keep Reijnders and could offer him more opportunities next season.

Manchester City would reportedly only consider selling Reijnders if they received a big-money offer for his services.

As a result, Newcastle could prioritise other midfield targets as Howe continues rebuilding his squad following Tonali’s departure.
