Rodri rebuilt his rhythm during the 2025-26 season after recovering from a serious ACL injury.
Manchester City managed his workload carefully, but he still made 33 appearances across all competitions. Any doubts over his level disappeared at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rodri captained Spain throughout the tournament and dominated midfield battles from start to finish. He recorded the most touches, completed passes and tackles of any player.
Spain then beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final. Rodri’s performances earned him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
His future has since become one of the biggest stories of the summer window. The 30-year-old has entered the final year of his Manchester City contract and wants to return to Spain.
Real Madrid initially led the race and opened talks with his representatives. However, negotiations later slowed because of differences over personal terms and the transfer fee.
Manchester City value Rodri at around €75 million, while Madrid want a cheaper agreement. Barcelona then entered the race after Frenkie de Jong suffered a serious knee injury.
Hansi Flick wants another experienced midfielder. Meanwhile, Deco has presented the club’s sporting project to Rodri’s camp.
According to MARCA, Rodri has chosen Barcelona over Real Madrid. He has also given the Catalan club permission to negotiate with Manchester City.
The report states that his decision has effectively ended Madrid’s hopes of signing him this summer. Barcelona must now reach an agreement with City, who could demand at least €50 million.
Rodri believes Barcelona‘s possession-based style suits his game. He would also reunite with several Spain teammates who helped win the World Cup.
However, the transfer still presents financial challenges. Barcelona must create enough squad and salary space before completing the deal.
For now, Rodri has made his preference clear. The next step rests with Barcelona as they prepare formal talks with Manchester City.
