Former AC Milan and Brazil star to buy League Two club

The Brazilian also helped Milan win Serie A during the 2010-11 campaign.

The 2026-27 League Two campaign begins on August 15, with 24 clubs chasing promotion across a demanding 46-game season.

Three teams have dropped into the fourth tier following relegation from League One. Meanwhile, York City, Barnet, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale have returned to the EFL.

One relegated club enters the season during a major period of change. The team finished bottom of League One last term and now faces an important rebuilding project.

Financial concerns have added further pressure. The club announced a pre-tax loss of almost £3 million in April. However, proposed investment could clear its debts and provide greater stability.

The current chairman confirmed last month that discussions with a “well-funded” group were “pretty much agreed”. That agreement has now moved closer to completion.

According to BBC Sport, a consortium involving former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato is set to buy a majority stake in Northampton Town.

The report states that Sports Alpha Capital previously explored a takeover of Colchester United. However, the investment group withdrew after holding initial discussions earlier this year.

Pato plays a prominent role within the consortium but will not lead the operation. Joao Xavier manages the investment group, which has now turned its attention towards Northampton.

The proposed takeover could make the Cobblers debt-free. It would also support manager Chris Hogg as he rebuilds the squad following relegation.

Northampton appointed Hogg in May and have already completed seven summer signings. Matty Warhurst arrived from Manchester City, while Connor Lemonheigh-Evans joined from MK Dons.

Pato retired from professional football last year after a distinguished playing career. He enjoyed his most successful period with AC Milan, scoring 63 goals across 150 appearances.

The Brazilian also helped Milan win Serie A during the 2010-11 campaign. Later, he joined Chelsea on loan and scored on his debut against Aston Villa.

Pato represented Brazil internationally and played for several prominent clubs. His involvement now places him among several former football stars who have entered English club ownership.
