Jadon Sancho remains without a club after leaving Manchester United when his contract expired at the end of June.
The 26-year-old has spent recent weeks assessing his options while maintaining his fitness at non-league side Flixton FC.
Interest has emerged from Qatar, but Sancho could yet remain in European football. His future follows three successive loan spells away from Old Trafford.
He spent time with Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, reaching a UEFA competition final during each campaign.
Sancho helped Chelsea win the Conference League before being part of Aston Villa’s Europa League-winning squad last season. However, neither club ultimately secured him permanently.
A return to familiar surroundings could now provide the winger with another opportunity to rebuild his career at the highest level.
According to Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard on talkSPORT, Borussia Dortmund have a willingness to bring Sancho back for a third spell.
However, any deal could depend on developments later in the transfer window. Dortmund are prepared to remain patient because Sancho is available without a transfer fee.
However, he would likely need to accept significantly lower wages to make another move to Germany realistic.
The Bundesliga giants are also considering other attacking options, which could influence whether they eventually make their move.
Dortmund have been strongly linked with Cologne youngster Said El Mala, who has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs.
Cologne are reportedly demanding around €50 million for the highly-rated 19-year-old.
Hatchard believes Dortmund may ultimately have to choose between investing heavily in El Mala or taking the lower-risk route of bringing Sancho back.
That decision could therefore leave Sancho waiting until the closing stages of the window before his situation becomes clearer. For now, Dortmund remain open to another reunion.
But Sancho’s willingness to compromise financially and the club’s pursuit of alternative targets could determine whether the move becomes reality.
