Aston Villa have endured major changes to their squad during the summer transfer window after an outstanding 2025-26 campaign.
Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for £117 million, while Youri Tielemans completed a move to Manchester United.
Ezri Konsa also joined Arsenal for £51 million, while Lucas Digne departed for Paris Saint-Germain.
Villa responded by bringing in several reinforcements as Emery prepares his squad for another Champions League campaign.
Johan Manzambi arrived from Freiburg for a club-record £51 million, while Joao Gomes also strengthened the midfield.
However, Villa still need more options in that area after Tielemans departed and Amadou Onana suffered a long-term ACL injury.
The club are now looking to add another experienced midfielder before the summer transfer window reaches its conclusion.
According to Matteo Moretto, Aston Villa are negotiating with former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka over a potential move.
The 31-year-old is currently available as a free agent after ending his eight-year spell with Bayern Munich this summer.
Goretzka made 312 appearances for the German giants during that period, scoring 51 goals and providing 53 assists.
He also played an important role when Bayern won the Champions League in 2020 after defeating Paris Saint-Germain.
Several European clubs have shown interest in Goretzka, including Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Arsenal.
However, none of those clubs have reached an agreement with the Germany international during the current transfer window.
Villa would not need to pay a transfer fee, although completing the deal would still require a significant financial commitment.
Goretzka reportedly wants around €7 million net per season alongside a signing bonus that could reach €10 million.
Therefore, those financial demands could become an important factor as Villa continue negotiations over a potential agreement.
